Another look at the recall election in California

I have shamelessly stollen this graphic to show that the pockets of Democratic presence represent a lot of people, but a small area of the state.

On the recall issue, here is a county-by-county look at the question. Each county in green voted "yes" to recall Davis by the amount shown. The counties in red voted "no" to recall Davis by the amount shown.

So, what's my point? Well, it shows that there are a few Democratic strongholds, but clearly a majority of the state wanted to get rid of Davis. It is also interesting that San Francisco voted the most strongly to keep Davis. So, the next time to hear news or read an editorial from San Fran, remember that it voted by 80% to keep an incompetent fool in charge, even though he completely wrecked the fifth largest economy in the world and drove it deeply in debt, for the sole purpose of preventing a Republican from getting that office. Of course, they were vastly out-voted, and Arnold is a Republican like I'm a Nobel prize-winning scientist. Arnold wants to restrict the Second Amendment and is pro-choice, both some of the Republicans' hard-line issues.

Now, I can probably understand how Arnold can resolve some of the apparent disparity that he portrays with the Republican party-line. For example, he might not believe that abortions are morally right, but be smart enough to realize that laws shouldn't enforce a particular religion's morality, or that Freedom of Choice is a higher moral ground than all others, and must be protected.

However, I fail to understand his anti-gun platform. All Republicans agree that the Right to own weapons is absolute. And Arnold has a more visible presence than most individuals with regards to gun usage. Look at his movies. With a few exceptions, he's played gun-toting roles in his most famous movies. How can a man who's made his money by guns be opposed to the rest of us wanting to own one?

Arafat Death Watch. Fellow blogger Meryl Yourish, whose blogs put mine to shame, is wondering what day the ol' towel-head will take the celestial dirt nap. Meryl's best work has to be "Annual Eat a Steak for PETA Day," which is still in my top 3. Of course, she's a professional writer, and I am just an opinionated personality disorder with free-time. She even has people write her back. I guess I'm not that inspiring as a writer. I was just hoping to make people think about the issues, possibly even from a different perspective.

Things that keep me up at night. I'm writing an article for a technical newsletter. If it gets published, I will post it here, otherwise, the trash bin awaits. Stay tuned for more on my writing career. And no, it doesn't pay anything.
