What if I told you that a major city was going to make a school that was "whites only' or "blacks only"? Would people care? I think there would be protests left and right! There would be cries of "Racism!" and lawsuits for the next 40 years.

What if a city made a school just for Asians? Or Indians? Or Eskimos? Would people cry out as hard?

What if I told you that a city made a special school just for Baptists? Or that they put all of the Jews in one school?

I bet there would be ACLU lawsuits and CNN news conferences condemning the oppressive racist unfair unlawful (etc.) acts of an "illegitimate government" seeking to "round up" people and put them in "concentration camps". There would be comparisons to Hitler, and thousands of people marching on Washington demanding "freedom" for the segregated students. There would be Supreme Court cases based on the Civil Rights Act, and undoubtedly Howard Dean would accuse Bush of using this as a distraction for his failure to find Saddam Hussein. Tom Daschle would be calling for a bi-partisan investigation and access to Bush's private diaries.

Why do I care? I think that any time you build a special school for people who don't need it, it sets a bad example, needlessly soaks the taxpayers, and opens the door for more abuses later on. First it's a school for gays and lesbians (let's not leave out the bi-sexuals and trans-gendered kids!), next year it's a school for fat kids, or a school for kids with glasses.

What is the cost of this new "school"? How about $3,000,000 for 100 sudents. They expect the school will house all of 170 students. What an investment. And what about the message it sends? You're gay, so you aren't like other kids. Do gay kids learn differently? It's one thing to have a school for kids who have learning disabilities. It's another thing to have separate schools for kids with different social calendars. It does nothing to teach social interactions, nothing to teach tolerance, nothing about getting along. It only teaches that others who are "different" need to be isolated, which goes against the founding principles of our Country. So much for the "melting pot". What confounds me is that none of the "civil rights" whores have their panties in a wad. You'd think Al Sharpton would be right there demanding that they be included with the other students, crying racism and historical segregation. But since blacks aren't being singled out, you won't catch Al anywhere nearby.

I have a simpler principle. I believe that if it is wrong to segregate people on the basis of race, we must respect the other components of the Civil Rights Act. It is unlawful to discriminate on the basis of race, religion, and sexual orientation. How hard is it to see that this violates the Constitution? Will I be the lone voice to stand up for inclusion, much the same way that the Jews stood alone in Atlanta during the Civil Rights movement and refused to segregate the blacks?

Notice that I don't have any grudge against the gay students. They have the right to be whatever they want. I don't want to stop their sexual habits any more than I want anyone to stop mine. But they should be in the same learning environment as the other students.
